In September of 2015 Mr. Trump stated ““The right of self-defense doesn’t stop at the end of your driveway … A driver’s license works in every state, so it’s common sense that a concealed carry permit should work in every state.”. He also stated at the same time that “Gun and magazine bans are a total failure”. While I agree 100% with Mr. Trumps words I have to question his actions, or lack there of. On May 20th 2016 Mr. Trump received the earliest endorsement by the NRA in election history, as well as massive support from the gun community at large. Yet, 72 days into his presidency we have heard no talk or seen any actions surrounding the 2nd amendment. I’m well aware that there are many major issues the president is currently dealing with, from North Korea to the Russian investigations, from the wall to the economy. However, isn’t this what we always hear? Whenever we get a pro gun politician in office we always hear that there are more pressing issues, and the 2nd amendment gets thrown on the back burner. Frankly I can’t seem to find a more pressing issue than the rights of the people who elected you, and the defense of their life and liberty. For the next 22 months or so we have a once in a lifetime opportunity, a fully Republican controlled federal government. The advances we could make in restoring the original intent of the 2nd amendment are limitless, all it takes is a little action. Bills like “The Hearing Protection Act” have been sitting idle on the house floor for years with no vote. The time has come that we stop accepting the status quo of being in the defensive when it comes to our rights, and get on the offensive. As suggested by Virginia attorney Lenden Eakin, a simple executive order reclassifying rifles such as AR-15’s and AK-47’s as “suitable for militia purposes” would effectively overturn state based assault weapons bans. These are simple actions that would assist gun rights groups in reestablishing our rights through the courts. From one concerned American to the next, i truly hope Mr. Trumps words were not merely political rhetoric and we see action soon!
